Side Effects

Important Safety Information

As with taking any medication, you should talk to your healthcare provider about possible side effects about clomiphene citrate.

Clomiphene citrate should only be prescribed by a doctor experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), with or without vascular and pulmonary complications, can occur with the use of fertility drugs and can be severe in nature.

Reports of multiple births have been associated with clomiphene citrate treatment. Clomiphene citrate should not be used in women who are allergic to clomiphene citrate preparations or their ingredients. Clomiphene citrate should not be used in patients who are pregnant.

Ovarian cancer has been reported in patients who have received fertility drugs like clomiphene citrate, although, since infertility itself (and some of its causes) are risk factors for ovarian cancer, there is debate over whether the use of fertility drugs increases the risk. Prolonged use of clomiphene citrate may increase the risk of a borderline or invasive ovarian tumor.

As with all prescription medications, side effects may occasionally occur. The most common side effects in patients using clomiphene citrate include hot flashes, stomach discomfort and bloating, nausea and vomiting, breast discomfort, visual symptoms, headache and vaginal bleeding.
